Building skill blocks 3

      We are now going to add triangles to our mix. Triangle are not that hard if you know how to do them. I am going to use a gray. That way I am adding a constant color, even though I am using different grays.The first one we will do, are called Half Square Triangles. We will need four 6 1/2 colored squares and four 6 1/2 gray squares. You will now need your marking pin or pencil. So lets get started.

 Take two, one gray, one colored 6 1/2 squares and place the front of the fabrics together, wrong sides on the out side. Mark with fabric pin one line from corner to corner. Mark a second line 1/4 inch out from first line. On the other side of the first line mark new line 1/4  inch out from first line.

                                                                                                                                                                   

You should now have 3 lines from corner to corner.

 Sew the two out side lines, then cut the center line. You will now have two 6 1/2 squares triangles. Press seams to the dark color. Now make another one. We now have four 6 1/2 squares triangles.

We will need to re-square, there is a line on the square that goes from corner to corner line it up with the sewn line on the fabric that goes corner to corner. Try to make sure everything is centered, you  will see it needs very little cut off, so square it any way.

 Laying it out like this, we have our first named block. It is a square in a square.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Pin the top two square together making sure to line up the top points. Sew from pin to pin. Making sure to remove the pins as you get to them. Press to the right or left. Sew the bottom squares the same as the top squares. Press in the other direction from the top.                                                                                                     

The layout will look like this when you are done.

Pin the top part to the bottom part, making sure to nest your seams and match your points. Sew and press seams open. Don't forget to remove your pins as you get to them.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               We now have a square in a square. Building skill blocks 2

In this part we will add rectangles and 2 1/2 inch squares to our mix. For this block you need two 6 1/2 inch squares and six 2 1/2 inch by 6 1/2 inch rectangles. I first squared and cut a straight line on my scrap martial. I then used my 6 1/2 inch square ruler and lined the martial up at the 2 1/2 inch mark and cut it out with a rotary cutter on my mat. Lay it out like the first picture.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

Sew the top three rectangles sewing top, middle, and bottom. Press seams up or down. Now sew the bottom rectangles in the same way, Press seams up or down. You now have two new 6 1/2 inch squares. Sew the top to squares together and press seams towards the solid square. Now sew the bottom squares together and press seam towards the solid square.Sew the top section to the bottom section, making sure to nest your seams. Press seam open.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

Look we now have a 4th block and all our seams look great. On this block we will use two 6 1/2 inch blocks, four 3 1/2 inch blocks and three 2 1/2 inch by 6 1/2 inch rectangles. This is the way I laid it out.

To sew we start with the 3 1/2 inch squares. Sew the top two 3 1/2 inch squares together and press seams towards the inside, now sew the bottom 3 1/2 inch squares together and press to the outside. Nest your seams and sew. Press seam open. Sew the 3 1/2 by 6 1/2 rectangles, starting with the top two. The sew the bottom rectangle to the top two, press seams down. We now have two new 6 1/2 inch squares. sew the top two 6 1/2 inch squares together and press towards the solid square. Sew the bottom two squares and press to the solid square. Now sew the top to the bottom, nesting your seams and press open.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

Block 5 is done. See how pretty our seams matches up.

I like to check and see if everything is square. All you do is lay your 12 1/2 inch ruler over it. If its a little to big, just trim it.Some times our seams may not be perfect. We are moving right along. On block 6 we will be using Two 6 1/2 inch squares, nine 2 1/2 inch squares, one 4 1/2 inch square, one 4 1/2 inch by 2 1/2  inch rectangle and one 2 1/2 inch by 6 1/2 inch rectangle. See how we keep adding more sizes to the mix? To start sewing we are going to start with the nine 2 1/2 inch squares. Sew the top 3 squares together, press seams to the inside sew the middle row together and press seams to the outside. Sew the bottom row together and press seams to the inside. Now sew the top row of 2 1/2 inch squares to middle row of 2 1/2 inch squares, nesting the seams. Press new seam open. Sew that piece to the bottom row of 2 1/2 inch squares, nesting seams. Press new seam open. Lets sew the bottom part together. sew the 4 1/2 inch square to the 2 1/2 inch by 4 1/2 inch rectangle, Press toward the 4 1/2 inch square. Sew that to the 6 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch rectangle, press seam to the 6 1/2 inch rectangle. We now have 2 new  6 1/2 inch squares. Sew the top two squares together and press seam to the solid square. Sew the bottom two together and press seam to the solid square. Now sew the two together                                           nesting the seam. Press seam open.

Building skill quilt blocks 1

How I love to play with blocks and come up with different type of  quilting blocks. In this section we will be making quilt blocks, starting with a square and working from there. By the time we are done we can make a sample quilt from them. Sound like fun?                                                               Things you will need, rotary cuter, 6 inch ruler square, scrap cotton material ( you may want to use fat quarters),iron, ironing board, marking tool (washable quilting pin, wash out quilting pencil), paper, pencil, and sewing machine.                   Lets get started. A 6 inch quilting ruler is really 6 1/2 inch ruler because of 1/4 seam allowance all the way around. Iron your material, never pressing down just lightly guiding it, and yes I use steam. Now lets cut 4- 6 1/2 inch block using the rotary cutter and ruler. I use quilt basting spray on the bottom of my ruler to keep it from sliding. Keep your fingers away from the blade. Lay out 4 of the 6 1/2 blocks to make a 12 1/2 block.                                                                                                                                                                           

Start by sewing the top two blocks together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Then sew the bottom two blocks together. this is what it looks like.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Iron the seam in opposite directions and nest them side by side with the seams touching.                                     

Place a pin to hold the seams side by side. Sew the seams, taking the pin out as you get to it. Use a 1/4 seam allowance.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             

Press seam open. We now have our first block with center corners matching perfect. That was pretty easy right? This is the first 12 1/2 block, each block on this quilt will be 12 1/2 inch blocks. When they are sewn together it will make 12 inches blocks, because of the seam allowances.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

Moving on to block 2 we will need two 6 1/2 squares and eight 3 1/2 inch squares. Line them up with four 3 1/3 inch squares beside one 6 1/2 inch square for the top. The bottom line is one 6 1/2 square beside four 3 1/2 squares.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Sew the top two 3 1/2 inch blocks together and then sew the bottom top two 3 1/2 inch blocks together. Press the seams in opposite directions and nest them together, just like on the top block, pin and sew. Remember to remove the pin when you get to it. Press seam open. Great, do the bottom four 3 1/2 blocks the same as the top four 3 1/2 blocks. Now you have made two 6 1/2 inch blocks.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         

Sew the top two blocks together and then the bottom two blocks together. Press in opposite directions, pin and sew. Remember to remove the pin when you get to it. I have broke needles by forgetting to remove them.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Press seams open. Look how pretty all our corners line open. Don't you think it looks good?                                                                                                                                                                               

We are now on block 3. For this block we need one 6 1/2 inch block and twelve 3 1/3 inch blocks. The 6 1/2 inch block will be in the center and the twelve 3 1/2 inch blocks on the outside. Surrounding it like so.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             

Sew the top center two 3 1/2 in blocks together, and then the bottom center two 3 1/2 inch blocks together. Press seams to the darker color, it does not mater if it is right or left. sew the top piece to the 6 1/2 inch square, press seam towards the center. Sew the bottom piece to the 6 1/2  inch square and press toward the center. Now sew the four 3 1/3 inch blocks on the left side together, press the top two seams down and the bottom two seams up. Then sew the four on the right side together. Press the top two seams down and the bottom two seams up. Then pin and nest your two seams on the left. Nesting your seams is why we pressed the seams the way we did. Sew and remove the pins as you get to them. Press seam open. Now nest your seams on the right side, pin, and sew. Don't forget to remove pins as you get to them. Press seam open.

You know have your third block and the seams look great. In the next blog we will be adding rectangles, 2 1/2 blocks and 4 1/2 blocks. Play with the ones you have learned, and have fun. Show me what combinations you come with. See you in the next blog.

Part one- How I made my long arm quilting machine, striping the parts

   I am not a welder, machinist, or a mechanic, with that being said if you cut your sewing machine in half I am not responsible. Trying to find out how to make a long arm quilting machine has been impossible. There are so many great You Tube videos and great blogs out there, about cleaning your machine, taking this part off or that part off and fixing it, yet there it was no one telling how to cut a machine and build a long arm. I know that people have made long arm machines, ok, so can I.  Homestead quilt machines are a example of this being done. As far as I know they no longer make long arm quilting machines. So here is how I made my long arm from a singer 66 sewing machine.                                                                                                                                                                                   The first thing that needed to be done was to strip the machine of its parts. I started with the presser bar. I can not stress enough to take lots of pictures of every thing you take off. It helps when you have to put them back on. I broke my phone so I lost all but a couple of pictures, therefore I am going to show what I did by using my long arm machine.

  I needed to remove the face plate. putting a towel under your machine it will help if you drop a screw or other little part. Small screws like to bounce and are almost impossible to find.  Take out the bottom screw, then use a small screwdriver and take out the small screw on top and front plate comes off.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

   To take off this thread guide take out this little screw with a small screwdriver .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Remove  the set screw with a small screwdriver, this is what holds the presser bar in place.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

Pull the presser bar up and out of the top.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

Grab the spring and pull out of the machine.                                                                 

Get a hold of this little bracket thing, that I don't know the name of and take her out. Place all your parts and screws in a baggie and labeled it presser bar.

    Its time to take out the needle bar and needle bar assembly. So far so good.
